Eluned joined the First Minister and Holocaust survivor Dr Martin Stern at a national service of commemoration at Cardiff’s City Hall to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Across Europe, people of all political persuasions and beliefs came together to remember those who were persecuted by Nazi forces during World War 2.
Between 1941 and 1945, the foundations of civilisation were shaken as six million Jewish men, women and children were murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators – statistics almost beyond comprehension.
The Holocaust Memorial Trust’s 2020 theme is Stand Together, remembering that genocidal regimes throughout history have deliberately fractured societies by marginalising certain groups.
Their message is clear – we cannot be complacent – prejudice and the language of hatred must be challenged by us all.
