Eluned was elected to the National Assembly in May 2016 as regional member for Mid & West Wales.
Shadow Minister for Wales in the Lords
In October 2013 she took up the position as Shadow Minister for Wales in the Lords, and combined this position with her responsibilities as whip for Foreign Affairs.
Labour Party’s European spokesperson on Energy, Industry and Science
Eluned was the Labour Party’s European spokesperson on Energy, Industry and Science. She was responsible for drafting the European Parliament’s response to the Energy Green Paper and also took the lead role in negotiating on behalf of the Parliament the revision of the Electricity Directive. Considerable strides were made in increasing the rights of consumers in the revisions and the issue of fuel poverty was for the first time placed on the European agenda.
Energy Green Paper
In 2006 Eluned was nominated as the European Parliament’s lead spokesperson on the European Commission’s Energy Green Paper – a comprehensive report addressing issues such as sustainability, security of supply and competitiveness.
In 2008 Eluned was appointed to lead the legislative process in the European Parliament on the reform of the electricity market.
Budget control spokesperson for the Socialist Group
Eluned Morgan served as the budget control spokesperson for the 180 strong Socialist Group. She took an instrumental role in continuing to hold the Commission to account after the forced resignation of the Commission in 1999.
Wales Labour Party Executive member for ten years
Serving as a member of the Wales Labour Party Executive, Eluned helped to steer the party through the birthing pangs of devolution, and was instrumental in delivering the twin to win policy which ensured equal representation of men and women from the Labour Party in the first Assembly election.
Member of the Welsh Assembly Advisory Group
The group was responsible for developing the standing orders of the National Assembly of Wales. Nominated by the Secretary of State for Wales to represent the Labour Party on the 13 member group.
Founding member of the Yes for Wales Campaign
A cross party group which campaigned for the Assembly to be established. Eluned was instrumental in helping to deliver the votes in key areas of Wales making hundreds of speeches and actively campaigning.
Founding Chair of Cymdeithas Cledwyn
Eluned founded Cymdeithas Cledwyn in 1999, a group forged to discuss politics through the medium of Welsh within the Labour Party.
