With all the news of the snap General Election you’d be forgiven for not remembering that there are elections for the County Council next week. I’ve been knocking on doors across Pembrokeshire with our local Labour candidates which is just one of the ways I keep up-to-date with what matters to people in the region I’m proud to represent in the Assembly. We’ve got some fantastic Labour candidates, new and familiar faces who will do what is right for our communities. I hope you’ll turn out to support them with your vote on Thursday 4 May.

The Welsh Labour Government continues to invest here in Wales with £422,000 just awarded to Credit Unions across Wales as we enter the 2017-18 financial year. The money will help credit unions continue their support for financially excluded members as well as help keep these valuable community assets going in the longer term. Projects will include community engagement programmes like the pilot project to tackle Door-to-Door Lending to be run by West Wales Credit Union Ltd, the Local Community Bank for Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire; and schools savings schemes like the School Saver Scheme Development Programme to be run by My Community Bank Wales, a Credit Union serving many of our communities across Wales.

The Labour Welsh Government is also investing over £2million to develop Welsh ports, The investment will help ensure they continue being a key contributor to economic growth as well as providing opportunities for new jobs within the industry.

Investment in our communities and in our country’s infrastructure is what Labour is all about. The choice at the General Election in June will be between a Labour who already build Wales for the many, and a Conservative Party who stand only for the privileged few. Britain needs a government for the many not the few. But the Tories in Westminster have proven that cannot be them. They have spent the past seven years giving the super-rich tax breaks, worth tens of billions, while working families are set to be on average over £1,400 a year worse off. Instead of a country run for the richest, Labour wants to see one in which all of us can lead richer lives. It would be a fairer Britain in which no one would be held back. Isn’t that the kind of country we all want to live in?
